How to Write a Long Essay
There are no fixed standards when it comes to essay length. In fact, there are no essays that could be either long or short. All of the essay types could take both forms—long and short. I can produce two versions of the same essay with varying degrees in length. Yet, the difference remains noticeable for the keen reader. If you are writing an essay and you still did not reach the required length, then you might want to apply the following tips from Essay Kitchen:
Longer general introduction
Instead of the one sentence that you have put as a general introduction, you could flesh it out with some more words that fall under the same topic, yet maintaining the same broad sense. For example, you could add: “Smoking could be really damaging in various ways; its harm is multi-dimensional”. Be careful not to be specific, unless you get to the thesis statement.
Expand upon the main details
As you have no paragraph number limit, you could add more ideas. Instead of sticking to only three-body elements, you could add a fourth main point, which would require the addition of more words, hence, one or more paragraphs.
More illustrative examples
You could add more than just three supporting pieces of evidence. Varying the illustrative examples enriches the essay and makes it look longer. However, you should keep the balance in terms of the distribution of examples. It wouldn’t be appropriate to put one example in the first paragraph and four examples in the following one. Consistency is the key.
Not closing off
If you have already reached the conclusion while you still feel like you have to make your essay even longer, you still have the last chance which is the conclusion. This tip should be understood well. You cannot add anything in the conclusion just to make it longer. Notwithstanding, you could choose not to close off by redefining the concept in question, broadening the topic, and calling into play a quote that belongs to a different approach. As such you spur the curiosity of the reader to learn more about the discussed issue.
